Special recognition of our volunteer Cooperating Attorneys of the past year. The talent and commitment to the principles of freedom and equality that these attorneys and their law firms provide is immeasurable to defending and advancing civil liberties in Oregon.
In the wake of the Snowden leaks that have revealed the shocking extent of the NSA's snooping on millions, our nation is in the midst of a reinvigorated debate around government surveillance and civil liberties. The ACLU has been at the forefront of the battle to rein in the federal government’s warrantless and suspicionless dragnet surveillance and we are proud to bring you one of ACLU’s leaders in that effort…
Featured speaker Ben Wizner, Director of the ACLU’s Speech, Privacy & Technology Project. a graduate of Harvard and NYU School of Law, Ben has litigated numerous cases involving post-9/11 civil liberties abuses, including challenges to airport security policies, government watch lists, and torture. He has also traveled to Guantánamo Bay to monitor military proceedings.
With today’s rapidly advancing technology and our government’s “war on terror,” Ben will explore the relevance of Ben Franklin’s famous warning, “Those who sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither." Ben is Edward Snowden's lead legal adviser and will also share why blowing the whistle on certain government secrets is important to a strong democracy.
Watch Ben Wizner on a NBC's Meet the Press.
