California’s Prop 8 Goes Down, Too!

June 26, 2013 - Today, the Supreme Court ruled, in the ACLU's lawsuit on behalf of Edie Windsor, that section 3 of the federal Defense of M

arriage Act (DOMA) violates the U.S. Constitution. This decision is a monumental victory for Edie Windsor and for married same-sex couples across the country. Even though the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal in the Perry case, the result means that California’s Prop 8 is unconstitutional, as well. Both of these cases are historic steps in the LGBT movement for equality.

But there is more work to do.

In Oregon, and 37 other states, same-sex couples still do not have the freedom to marry the person they love. The work has begun to amend the Oregon constitution so that same-sex couples may also have the freedom to marry. ACLU of Oregon is proud to partner with Basic Rights Oregon and fully supports the Oregon United for Marriage Campaign to bring a ballot measure to voters in November 2014 that will enshrine the freedom to marry in our state constitution.

Supporters of the Freedom to Marry are encouraged to attend rallies today at 5 p.m. in Portland at the Terry Schrunk Plaza and in Eugene at the Wayne Morse Free Speech Plaza.
