The ACLU of Oregon, Inc. does not endorse or oppose candidates for elected office.
But we encourage the ACLU community to review candidates’ positions and records on civil liberties and civil rights issues, including:
- The right and freedom of all people to bodily and life autonomy, which includes the right to abortion and reproductive health care, trans rights and health care, and the right to sexual orientation and same-gender marriage.
- The rights of immigrants and refugee communities.
- Free speech rights, including the right to learn and read without discriminatory book bans and censorship.
- The right of all people to be treated with dignity and value — without dehumanization — regardless of how much money they have or whether they can afford shelter off the streets.
- The right of all people to have their illness or disability — including drug addiction — addressed as a health matter instead of a criminal one.
- Racial justice and the right of Black, Indigenous, and people of color communities to not be oppressed by systemic racism.
- The right of all communities, including people with disabilities, to real public safety, which is best served when mental health crises are addressed by non-police crisis response teams like CAHOOTS in Eugene and Portland Street Response in the City of Portland.
