HB 2928 was adopted as Oregon law in 2021. It placed reasonable limits on police's use of tear gas and munitions against peaceful protestors, community members, and the environment. In 2021, cities and police were at the table and agreed to this legislation.

The passage of this law was important. Before the law was adopted, Portland Police used tear gas night after night, on peaceful protestors, journalists, ACLU of Oregon legal observers, and families with children too who were poisoned by tear gas in their homes.

Now, the City of Portland is trying to roll back the important protections of this law during the short legislative session when there is limited time for the public's participation. This is part of their continued efforts to undermine police accountability efforts and silence communities.

We need all hands on deck to stop police from using these weapons of war against Oregonians. Join us Tuesday, February 8, 5:30 p.m. at the People's Hearing to learn more about how you can advocate with us through testimony and story sharing and how you can stop the City of Portland and Portland Police from their attempts to continue harming communities with violence and chemical munitions.
